Frome School Streets Consultation
Overview
Over the past few years, Frome Town Council has been working with active travel charity Sustrans, and Somerset Council to implement Frome’s first School Streets in the Oakfield and Park Wards. A School Streets area limits vehicle access during drop-off and pick-up times making it safer to walk, scoot or cycle to and from school.
School Streets aim to:
- Create a safer and more pleasant environment for those travelling to and from school
- Reduce traffic and congestion, and improve road safety
- Encourage active travel for some, or all, of the journey to and from school
- Better the overall health and wellbeing of young people and their families
- Positively impact the quality of the air outside the school gates and in the surrounding area
The identified School Streets zone will serve 4 schools and a nursey, and over 1500 children – Oakfield Academy, Trinity First School, Critchill School, Avanti Park School and Bright Stars Nursery. Sections of Oakfield Road (outside Oakfield Academy) and Nunney Road (outside Trinity First School) will have limited vehicle access between 08:10 – 09:00 and 2:45 – 3:30, Monday – Friday during term time, and Park Road (up to Avanti Park School) 8:25 – 8:55. A 20 mph limit will be introduced along all roads in the School Street area. Please see map.
Please note that all residents of streets within the School Streets area will still be able to access their streets without restrictions, along with buses, blue badge holders, emergency services, trades people
Highway improvement works for Frome School Streets will start at the beginning of November. Restrictions will be implemented in Spring 2024 for a trial period of 18 months, with the hope that it’ll become permanent if children, parents, staff and local residents are in support of the scheme.
