We asked how we should spend limited money on key services in 2026 to 2027 and what should matter most.

You said

Structured responses were gathered using our consultation platform Citizen Space, and paper copies were made available in libraries across the county. Unstructured responses and feedback were gathered via email and social media comments.

Overall, the consultation received 1,427 responses. 1,358 of those responses were from people describing themselves as residents of Somerset, 114 from businesses, and the rest made of up Councillors, Somerset Council employees, people from community groups or charities.

Overview

Welcome to Somerset Council’s Budget Consultation for the next financial year (April 2026 to March 2027). This consultation is a vital part of our commitment to transparency, community engagement, and financial planning.  

As we plan our budget, we need your input to help us prioritise and allocate resources effectively. We aim to ensure that our financial decisions reflect the needs and aspirations of our communities.  

Somerset Council provides many local services – from adult and children’s social care to rubbish collection and recycling, public health and education, roads, transport, and leisure services, as well as support for businesses.  

Like many households, we continue to face financial pressures driven by factors beyond our control. The cost of providing services is increasing, just as the cost of living has risen for everyone. We want to manage our finances responsibly, but our budget remains under significant strain. 

Why your views matter

We want to hear from you. Your views will help shape the budget for the coming year, so it reflects the priorities of our community. This consultation is open to everyone: residents, businesses, and local organisations because every perspective matters. 

The budget affects the services and facilities you use every day, from waste collection and road maintenance to libraries and community support. Your feedback helps us make decisions that work for everyone.
