Celebration Mile traffic flow options consultation

Overview

Celebration Mile connects the railway station, Eastover, the river and the docks. The aim is to create a clear route through the heart of Bridgwater for everyday journeys, shopping and leisure which is easier to move around, safer to use and a more enjoyable place to spend time.

The scheme was delivered in 2025, bringing changes to streets, public spaces and traffic movements on Eastover, Salmon Parade and East Quay to reduce traffic dominance and put people first.

Following comments from residents, businesses and councillors about the traffic implications of the scheme and reduced footfall in the Eastover area over the last 2 years, Somerset Council commissioned a review to understand how the Celebration Mile is working and to test whether different traffic arrangements could perform better.

When we refer to the Eastover area in this consultation, this area includes the streets of Eastover, Salmon Parade and East Quay.

When reviewing the options for the Eastover area, please consider the following:

  • How traffic operates at busy times.
  • How safe and comfortable the streets feel.
  • How the town centre works as a place, not just a route.
  • How well the area supports visitors and local businesses.

Celebration Mile brings together a diverse mix of people—from shoppers and diners to business owners and commuters.

The options we’re asking you to review include the existing layout and four alternative options. We want your views on what would work well, where there are challenges, and what opportunities or benefits each option could bring for the whole community.

The aim is to understand which option best supports a safe, welcoming and thriving town centre for Bridgwater for everyone.

We need your views to help us do this.
