Wellington Waterways Feasibility Study

Closed 4 Mar 2024

Opened 5 Feb 2024

Overview

Somerset Council has commissioned Arup to prepare a Wellington Waterways Feasibility Study (WWFS), with the aim of: proposing a vision for reducing flood risk to key heritage assets of Tonedale (Tonedale Mill and Tone Works); and  delivering wider benefits for nature and the community of Wellington.

The Study’s objectives as set out in the specification by Somerset Council are to:

“gain a clear understanding of the options and feasibility for reducing flood risk to Tonedale, Wellington and the wider catchment; whilst at the same time presenting innovative enhancements to the historic, landscape and ecological context.”

The Tonedale Mill and Tone Works sites are the primary focus of this study; their employment opportunities have been central to the development of Wellington as a town. The location of both sites and subsequent constraints imposed on the river systems by the existing water management system has placed them at significant flood risk, which is likely to increase with a changing climate.

This engagement exercise builds on discussions held with the Steering Group and Community Forum. With your input we are aiming to develop a solution that is beneficial for the residents, visitors and business owners of Wellington.

Why your views matter

Your say is key in planning for Wellington and we want to know what you think. What are the opportunities and challenges presented by the waterways in Wellington? What matters most to you? How can we get the most benefit for the community and the environment?

This is an exciting time for Wellington, with lots of opportunities for the area that come along investment presented by the Levelling Up Fund and new Railway Station. We want to keep up the momentum that these opportunities bring to the town and ensure that these align with community aspirations.

This consultation runs from Monday 5 February to Monday 4 March.

You can respond online to this consultation. Alternatively you can email responses to planningpolicywest@somerset.gov.uk, or post a response to Planning Policy, Somerset Council, County Hall, Taunton, Somerset, TA1 4DY.
