Wellington Active Travel - Nynehead Road Roundabout towards Priory
Overview
Somerset Council have developed proposals to improve walking, wheeling and cycling in your area and we want to hear from you.
Where
The proposals focus on a section of Taunton Road in Wellington from Nynehead Road Roundabout towards Priory near the town centre.
What
The Scheme summary document provides an introduction to the proposals with finer details shown on the design drawings. The proposals include:
- 3 signalised crossings suitable for walking and cycling (Toucan crossings)
- Off-road segregated paths with separate lanes for users walking or cycling
- two-way cycle paths where extra space is available
- Off-road shared path to link into existing route near Lidl
- A new footway on the south side near Cades Gardens
- Proposed speed limit change from 40mph to 30mph from Nynehead Road to join up with existing 30mph limit in the town centre
- On-road cycle lanes with light segregation where space is limited
The scheme is part of Route 2 from Chelston to the Town Centre in the Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan and provides a key link to the forthcoming train station.
The proposals are part of the Council’s submission to Active Travel England for the use of Active Travel Fund 5 funding. Works expect to start on the scheme in early 2027. £573,620 of Section 106 funds were also secured as part of the Longforth Farm development (application Ref. 43/23/0056).
